William V of Bavaria, known as "the Pious," was Duke of Bavaria from 1579 to 1597, a member of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Educated by Jesuits, he became one of the staunchest defenders of the Counter-Reformation, promoting the restoration and expansion of Catholic institutions in the duchy: he funded colleges and convents, supported the Jesuit order, and sponsored the construction of St. Michael’s Church and the Jesuit college in Munich.
Politically and ecclesiastically, William used dynastic and military means to increase his family’s influence: he secured the archbishopric and electorate of Cologne for his brother Ernest, a position that remained tied to the Wittelsbachs for two centuries. He also placed sons in high clerical offices, strengthening the Catholic presence in regional institutions.
His rule was marked by repressive measures against non‑Catholics and by the creation of an Ecclesiastical Council that regulated the state’s religious and educational life. Witch hunts during his reign and heavy spending on missions and religious projects strained the ducal treasury.
He abdicated in 1597 in favor of his son Maximilian I and retired to a monastery, where he lived in contemplation until his death in 1626. He left an artistic and architectural legacy—notably projects by Friedrich Sustris and works of sculpture and painting serving the court—alongside religious and educational institutions that were fundamental to modern Bavaria.
