Enrico Fermi was an Italian‑American physicist whose career combined theory and experiment in a rare balance. Trained and awarded a doctorate at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, he first became known for contributions to statistical mechanics — Fermi–Dirac statistics is named for his description of particles that obey the Pauli exclusion principle — and for foundational work in quantum theory and relativity as applied to atomic physics.

During the 1930s he led pioneering neutron experiments that culminated in the discovery of nuclear fission, work that earned him the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics. After emigrating to the United States, he took part in the Manhattan Project and oversaw the construction of the first nuclear reactor at the University of Chicago, a decisive milestone for the controlled use of nuclear energy.

After the war, Fermi turned his attention to particle physics, introducing the concept of the weak interaction and contributing to the understanding of beta decay. His scientific legacy is celebrated for both theoretical influence and experimental applications; in 1952 the chemical element fermium was named in his honor.
