Charlotte Augusta Matilda, Princess of the House of Hanover, was best known as the consort of Frederick of Württemberg, holding the titles Duchess (1797–1803), Electress (1803–1806) and, after the territory’s elevation, Queen Consort of Württemberg (1806–1816). Born the daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte, she received a refined education in languages, history and the arts, which prepared her for court duties and for an influential presence in the public life of the German principality.
During the upheavals of the Napoleonic Wars the couple endured temporary exile and political instability, but they consolidated their position when Württemberg was raised to a kingdom, a moment that marked the height of her institutional role. Widowed in 1816, Charlotte maintained close ties with the British royal family and returned briefly to England in 1827.
Her legacy is that of an educated, adaptable princess who moved from the British court to the political and social context of early nineteenth‑century Germany, helping to legitimize the dynasty and enhance Württemberg’s prestige until her death in 1828.
