Michelangelo Antonioni was an Italian filmmaker whose work renewed the language of modern cinema by exploring alienation, the inability to communicate, and the existential emptiness of urban classes. Trained in economics and later trained at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Antonioni rose to international prominence with L'avventura (1960), followed by La notte (1961) and L'eclisse (1962); these films, together with Il deserto rosso (1964), form a tetralogy focused on the tensions of modernity. His collaboration with actress Monica Vitti became emblematic, giving voice to female characters who are distant and disconnected from the world around them.
In 1966 he achieved wide recognition with Blowup, his first English-language film, which combined commercial success with aesthetic unease by questioning the perception of reality. Later works, such as Zabriskie Point and The Passenger, maintained his interest in landscapes and in long contemplative sequences that favor image over dialogue. Antonioni won awards at several international festivals, including Cannes, Venice and Berlin, and received an honorary Oscar in 1995.
Critics identify his style by long takes, dramatic silence and a camera that records the intimate decay of the bourgeoisie without romanticizing it. Even after a severe stroke in 1985, he remained active, collaborating on Beyond the Clouds (1995) and Eros (2004), solidifying a legacy of lasting influence on generations of filmmakers.
