Ernest II of Brunswick-Lüneburg was a prince of the House of Welf who ruled the principality of Lüneburg from 1592 to 1611. The eldest son of William of Brunswick-Lüneburg and Dorothea of Denmark, he studied at the universities of Wittenberg, Leipzig and Strasbourg before taking up government in Celle after his father's death.
His reign was dominated by ongoing efforts to reorganize the principality's finances: he inherited a state deeply in debt and spent much of his rule stabilizing the principality's finances and the family's patrimonial situation. Initially constrained by an agreement with his brother and the nobility, he nevertheless extended his exercise of power until his death.
In 1610 he promulgated the so-called Celle Family Treaty, an important dynastic measure that secured the indivisibility of the principality — an agreement later confirmed by the emperor in 1612. He never married and left no descendants; he was succeeded by his brother Christian. His tomb is located in the princely crypt of St. Mary’s Church in Celle.
