George, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, was a German prince and duke who assumed government of the Principality of Calenberg in 1635, as the territories of the House of Guelph were divided. Born into a distinguished family — a grandson of Danish sovereigns and of dukes of Brunswick — he is noted for establishing the official residence in Hanover, where he began construction of the Leine Palace, signaling the court’s growing political and administrative importance.
During the early years of his reign he was under the regency of his mother, who resumed control of the state after episodes of his father’s incapacity and curtailed the influence of counselors who had harmed the principality. The 1635 succession formalized the separation of Calenberg (including the former Principality of Göttingen) from other Guelph domains, while other branches of the family received Lüneburg.
Married to Countess Anna Eleonore of Hesse-Darmstadt, George had several children, among them Ernest Augustus, the future Elector of Hanover, and Christian Louis, his immediate successor. His actions strengthened the dynastic and territorial foundations that allowed the family to consolidate power in the region, leaving institutional and architectural legacies in Hanover.
