Carlo Tito Francesco Giuseppe, known as the Duke of Calabria, was the heir to the kingdoms of Naples and Sicily in the 18th century. The firstborn son of the Neapolitan monarch, he received at birth the traditional title reserved for the presumptive heir, placing him at the center of his dynasty’s succession expectations. His ancestry connected him to the leading European dynasties: his mother was a daughter of Maria Theresa of Austria and a sister of Marie Antoinette, a fact that reinforced political ties between Naples and the Austrian courts. Under the marriage agreement between the two realms, his family participated in governing institutions, reflecting the strategic importance of those alliances. Carlo’s short life was marked by family tragedy: he died of smallpox at age three, an event that also claimed close siblings and affected the line of succession. His funeral took place in Naples, where he was buried in the Basilica of Santa Clara. Although his life was brief, his figure illustrates the vulnerability of dynasties in the period and the impact of infectious disease on succession and dynastic politics of the time.
