Christian, Duke of Saxe-Eisenberg, was a German prince of the House of Wettin and the sole duke of Saxe-Eisenberg at the end of the 17th century. A son of Duke Ernest I of Saxe-Gotha, he took part in the complex territorial partition among brothers that fragmented the Saxon states: after initially ruling jointly with his brothers, he established himself in Eisenberg and commissioned the construction of Christiansburg castle as the seat of his court. In his youth he traveled extensively and cultivated an interest in history and the arts, maintaining a life oriented toward patronage and the cultural pursuits typical of the nobility of his time. He married twice; from his first marriage he had a daughter, Cristiana, who married into princely houses of northern Europe. In his later years he devoted himself to alchemy and encountered financial difficulties, dying in debt and without male heirs. The absence of a male descendant sparked prolonged disputes over the succession of his territories, resolved only decades later, illustrating the dynastic and territorial tensions among the small German states of the period.
