John II, Duke of Saxe-Weimar, was a German noble of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, a member of the House of Wettin. The second son of John William, he assumed full rule of the duchy only after the death of his elder brother, Frederick William I, in 1602, in a succession that led to the formal partition of the territories among the family lines. The division created Saxe-Altenburg for the nephews and left Weimar–Jena under John’s government.
As a ruler, John showed greater interest in the natural sciences and the arts than in active state administration, at times exercising the regency reluctantly. His reserved stance toward power and the 1603 treaty shaped the territorial arrangement that would affect subsequent generations: the Saxe-Altenburg line died out in 1672, and its possessions eventually reverted to John’s descendants.
Married to Dorothea Maria of Anhalt, he had twelve children, among them significant successors such as John Ernest I, William and Ernest I of Saxe-Gotha, whose lines and careers expanded the family’s political and military role in the European conflicts of the 17th century.
