Duque de Saxe-Weimar Wilhelm

Guilherme, Duke of Saxe‑Weimar (1598–1662), was a German nobleman and ruler whose career combined military, political and institutional roles during the upheavals of the Thirty Years’ War. Son of John II and Dorothea Maria of Anhalt, he studied at Jena and completed his education with travels through France, Great Britain and the Low Countries, forming cultural and intellectual contacts that influenced his public life. As a member of an influential family — brother of the noted Protestant general Bernard and of Ernest I — William acted as regent for his relative John Ernest’s lands in 1620 and succeeded to the duchy in 1626. He allied with Protestant commanders and rose through the military ranks with the support of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, although he was later removed from further commands and obliged to accept the Peace of Prague (1635). During his reign he consolidated control over the family territories (Weimar and Jena) and also engaged in cultural and civic activities: he was a founder of the Fruitbearing Society and, from 1651, served as its second leader, carrying out representative duties until the end of his life. Married to Eleanor Dorothea, he left descendants who continued the dynastic line and the family’s political presence in Thuringia.
