Eamonn Andrews was an Irish broadcaster and presenter whose career was largely based in the United Kingdom from the 1950s through the 1980s. Beginning as a sports commentator and an amateur boxing champion, he became a frequent voice on Irish state radio before moving to the BBC, where he gained prominence with boxing broadcasts and audience entertainment programmes.
He became a public figure by hosting high‑rating formats such as What's My Line? and, above all, This Is Your Life, which he presented from its debut in 1955 until his death, becoming one of the most recognisable faces on British television. He also fronted entertainment and news programmes and was a pioneer of the chat‑show format in the UK.
Around 1960 he took the presidency of the Irish radio‑television authority, a role in which he oversaw the introduction of a state television service and defended the broadcaster’s independence and freedom of expression. He received institutional recognition for his contributions to broadcasting and left a lasting mark on British television and popular culture.
