Maria Antonia of Bourbon-Two Sicilies was Grand Duchess consort of Tuscany from 1833 to 1859 by her marriage to Leopold II. Born into the royal House of the Two Sicilies, she joined the European Bourbon dynastic network and quickly won popular sympathy in Florence, where her beauty and Italian origins aided public acceptance and hopes for the succession. As sovereign consort she played a prominent role at court: she was a noted patron of the arts, sponsoring artists such as Giovanni Duprè and supporting local music, as well as frequenting ateliers and promoting cultural initiatives. Her name also became associated with urban works and public spaces that were dedicated in her honor during her reign. Lacking an extensive formal education, she practiced the Catholic faith devoutly and encouraged religious practices such as the cult of Saint Philomena, influencing chaplaincies and confraternities. In her private life she suffered family tragedies: several children died in childhood, an experience that marked her personal life and the court’s dynamics.
