Philip V, the first Spanish monarch of the House of Bourbon, ushered in a new political era in Spain when he succeeded Charles II in 1700. Born at the French court, his accession to the throne triggered the War of the Spanish Succession, a European conflict that redrew borders and culminated in the Treaty of Utrecht, which imposed limits on the union of Bourbon crowns. Despite territorial losses in Europe and the Mediterranean, Philip carried out administrative and centralizing reforms that reduced regional privileges and reorganized the empire’s administration. His reign, covering two separate periods, is the longest in Spanish monarchical history and was marked both by modernizing measures and by episodes of personal fragility: contemporary and later accounts point to mental health problems that affected his rule. Guided by family interests and French influence, Philip pursued policies aimed at consolidating royal power against local oligarchies. Philip’s reputation combines institutional achievements with dynastic and personal controversies; his legacy lies in the centralization of the Spanish state and the dynastic shift that reshaped Europe’s political map in the 18th century.
