Earl R. McCullouch is a former American athlete whose career spanned elite track and field and professional American football. In track he was NCAA champion in the 120-yard high hurdles (1967 and 1968), NCAA indoor champion in the 60-yard high hurdles (1968), and a member of the University of Southern California 4×110-yard relay team that set a world record in 1967. He also held the world record in the 110-meter hurdles from July 1967 to July 1969.
In college football he played wide receiver for the USC Trojans and was a key contributor to their 1967 national championship run. Known for his sprinter’s speed, he excelled both on receiving routes and in blocking on running plays, sharing the field with teammates such as O. J. Simpson. In 1968 he was taken in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions (24th overall), beginning a professional career that combined his athleticism with immediate offensive production.
A turning point in his career came with the choice between the Olympic Games and professional football: after a setback in the semifinals of the 1968 Olympic trials, he chose to join the NFL. His legacy rests at the intersection of the two sports, as an example of a dual athlete whose speed and hurdling technique influenced both collegiate track and the professional game.
