Edgar William Brandt was a French blacksmith and designer whose work crossed the boundary between decorative craftsmanship and the armaments industry. Trained in metallurgy, he began his career making jewelry and small objects and soon received notable architectural commissions—railings, staircases, and doors for institutions and theaters—aligning with the emergence of Art Deco in France. In the 1910s and 1920s he established larger workshops and a catalog of pieces, scaling production to include shop entrances, lighting fixtures, and radiator covers that emphasized the ornamental character of each object. His studio grew to employ hundreds, combining elegant design with modern production methods. During the First World War he focused on the development of mortars and ammunition; his mortar grenade design and other systems—including innovations in armor‑piercing projectiles and conical shaped charge explosives (HEAT)—were widely adopted and replicated internationally. After the war he expanded again and, despite the nationalization of his company in 1936 and his exile during the Second World War, he left a technical and industrial legacy: the Brandt name survived and evolved, linking its artisanal origins to large‑scale production.
