Edgar Carl Alfons Ende was a German surrealist painter whose work established him as a significant figure in the movement in his country. Trained at the Altona School of Arts and Crafts, Ende developed a dreamlike and symbolic repertoire that was already notable in the 1930s, when his paintings began attracting critical attention. The Nazi regime, however, labeled his works “degenerate” and, from 1936, forbade him to paint or exhibit, interrupting his public career for several years. Confronted with the war, Ende served in the Luftwaffe; in 1944 a bombing destroyed most of his works, which makes the surviving pieces—especially those from the prewar period—rare and valuable for study of the era. After the war he resumed producing work and, in 1951, was recognized by André Breton as an official surrealist, affirming his direct connection to the international current. Ende’s influence extends beyond the visual arts: his dreamlike images affected the work of his son, the writer Michael Ende, and are referenced in texts and publications that link narrative and painting. Edgar Ende maintained, until his death in 1965, an output marked by a fantastic imagination and a pictorial resistance to the twentieth century’s historical upheavals.
