Eleanor Marx was a socialist activist, literary translator and labor organizer born in London, known both for her political work and for being the daughter of Karl Marx. Involved from a young age in politics and literature—helping prepare and translate key works such as volumes of Das Kapital and writings by other socialists—she devoted herself to spreading socialist ideas in the United Kingdom and abroad. Throughout her life she joined and helped found socialist organizations, including the Socialist League after disagreements with the leadership of the Social Democratic Federation. She wrote and edited political texts, maintained public columns and took an active part in international campaigns and congresses in defense of the working class. Eleanor also played a significant role in the trade union movement and in urban labor struggles, supporting important strikes at the end of the nineteenth century and assisting in the organization of unions such as the gasworkers’ union. Her attention to social issues included work with Jewish working-class communities, learning Yiddish and speaking out against persecution. Her legacy combines intellectual production, editorial work on her father’s writings and practical action alongside workers’ movements, leaving a mark on the history of British socialism in the nineteenth century.
