Agnes of Hesse (1527–1555) was a German noblewoman, daughter of Landgrave Philip I of Hesse and Duchess Christine of Saxony, who became Electress of Saxony by marriage. In 1541 she married Maurice of Saxony, the future Elector; the marriage was notable for being entered into by mutual consent, and the couple’s correspondence reveals friendship, trust and Agnes’s involvement in her husband’s political affairs. Two children were born of this first marriage; only the daughter Anna reached adulthood and later married Prince William I of Orange. After Maurice’s death in 1553, Agnes also took on family responsibilities, supervising the education of her younger siblings. In 1555 she married again, to Duke John Frederick II of Saxony, but already weakened by ill health she suffered a miscarriage and died six months later; contemporary accounts mention possible poisoning, but the cause remains uncertain. Agnes’s legacy is found mainly in the dynastic networks of the period: through her daughter Anna she maintained ties to the House of Orange, and her political and educational involvement reflects the active role some high-nobility women played at sixteenth-century German courts.
