Maria Josepha of Saxony was a princess by birth and an Archduchess of Austria by marriage, belonging to the royal houses of Saxony and the Habsburgs. The daughter of King George I of Saxony and Infanta Maria Anna of Portugal, she is best known as the mother of Charles I, the last Emperor of Austria. She married in 1886 Archduke Otto Francis of Austria. Their married life was marked by difficulties; accounts report her husband’s infidelities and Maria Josepha’s deep religiosity, which led her to shield their children from their father’s influence. Despite these personal challenges, she maintained a discreet public presence and carried out the traditional social roles expected of nobility. During the First World War she devoted herself to caring for the wounded at the Augarten Palace, which had been converted into a hospital, reflecting her charitable work in times of conflict. After the empire’s collapse she accompanied the family into exile, living first in Switzerland and later in Germany. She died in 1944 at Schloss Wildenwart in Bavaria and was interred in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna beside her husband. Her legacy remains tied to her central place in the genealogy of European royal houses and to her maternal role in perpetuating the Habsburg line.
