Ellen Virginia Holly was an American actress whose career was established in theatre and television. Trained in dramatic arts and a lifelong member of The Actors Studio, she performed on Broadway and in New York Shakespeare Festival productions, taking on classical and contemporary roles before moving to screen work. She became best known for portraying Carla Gray–Hall on the soap opera One Life to Live (late 1960s to mid-1980s), a role that made her the first Black actress to hold a prominent part on U.S. daytime television. The storyline confronted sensitive racial themes by revealing that her character, raised as white, actually came from a Black family, and her on-screen romance provoked a strong public reaction. Beyond the soap opera, Holly appeared in films and series, including a role in Spike Lee’s School Daze and a guest appearance on Guiding Light as a judge. She also wrote an autobiography recounting the difficulties she faced as a light-skinned actress in Hollywood and criticizing racial casting practices. Born into a family with a notable educational and religious legacy within the Black community, she left her acting career to work as a librarian, and is remembered as a pioneer for racial representation on daytime television.
