Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta was a Mexican businessman and telecommunications pioneer whose work shaped much of Mexico’s media landscape in the twentieth century. He began his career in trade and product distribution, later expanding into radio with the launch of XEW-AM in 1930, which became a commercial success and the foundation for building broadcast networks. In the 1940s he consolidated an initial network of stations, to which he added initiatives such as the Red Azul. He also invested in the film industry by founding the Churubusco Studios and creating a chain of cinemas that increased the circulation of domestic productions. In 1951 he entered television with the creation of Channel 2 and, after partnerships with other channels, formed Telesistema Mexicano in 1955, a far-reaching communications conglomerate. His corporate legacy endured after his death, when the consolidation of companies in the sector culminated in the formation of Televisa, later recognized as one of the largest media companies in Latin America. Azcárraga is remembered for building radio, film and television infrastructure that influenced Mexican culture and the media industry.
