Emanuel Lasker was one of the leading chess players at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, a mathematician and an author. He became the second world chess champion by defeating Wilhelm Steinitz in 1894 and held the title for 27 years, a longevity record that marks his era of competitive dominance. He won numerous prestigious tournaments — including London, Paris, Saint Petersburg and New York — and built a remarkable record in matches and international competitions.
Beyond his chess career, Lasker earned a doctorate in mathematics under the supervision of David Hilbert and worked as a teacher; he published academic papers and also wrote about games such as bridge. He was known for a strategic approach often described as “psychological,” choosing moves intended to unsettle opponents and exploiting human factors beyond pure theory.
Of German–Jewish origin, he was forced to emigrate in 1933 because of the Nazi advance, moving through England and the Soviet Union before settling in New York. His legacy combines theoretical contributions to chess — including variations that bear his name — with a multifaceted intellectual career that placed him among the central figures of modern chess.
