Erik Schinegger is an Austrian skier whose sporting and personal story drew international attention. He emerged as the world downhill champion in 1966, a title won while competing as a woman under the name Erika Schinegger; that victory was the high point of a young, promising career in European and North American alpine ski competitions.
In 1967 he recorded his only World Cup win, in the giant slalom at Saint-Gervais, and claimed the Austrian national giant slalom title. Before the 1968 Olympics, medical examinations identified intersex characteristics, prompting him to publicly assume a male identity, change his name to Erik, and undergo surgical intervention.
Schinegger’s story went beyond sport: it became the subject of books, a documentary and a film, and over the decades he worked as a local businessman, running a ski school and other establishments in his native Carinthia. His case provoked debates about eligibility regulations in sport and left a legacy concerning identity and inclusion in athletics.
