Ernst Boris Chain was a German biochemist of Jewish origin, known for his central role in the discovery and development of penicillin as a therapeutic agent. Trained in chemistry at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin, he emigrated to England in 1933 in the face of Nazi persecution, working at institutions such as University College Hospital, Cambridge and later Oxford, where he expanded his biochemical research.
During World War II he joined Howard Florey to investigate microbial antibiotics, work that led to the purification, concentration and clinical application of penicillin; this collaborative effort earned Chain, Florey and Alexander Fleming the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945. With Edward Abraham he helped propose the beta-lactam structure of penicillin, later confirmed by crystallography.
After the war he worked in Rome and returned to the United Kingdom in 1964 to found and head the Department of Biochemistry at Imperial College London, where he focused on fermentation technologies. Naturalized British, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and was appointed a Knight Bachelor. In addition to his scientific career, he remained active in matters related to Jewish identity, serving on bodies of the Weizmann Institute and expressing his convictions in public speeches.
