Eugène Schueller was a French pharmacist and entrepreneur, known for founding the company that would become L'Oréal. Graduating in 1904 from the Institut de Chimie Appliquée de Paris, he developed an innovative hair-color formula in 1907—named Oréale—and began manufacturing and selling his own cosmetics to Parisian hairdressers, formalizing the business in 1909 as Société Française de Teintures Inoffensives pour Cheveux.
Under his leadership the company grew from chemical research applied to beauty products, establishing itself as a pioneering enterprise in the French cosmetics industry. His work as an inventor and businessman laid the industrial and commercial foundations that allowed the company to expand in subsequent decades.
The historical context of Schueller’s life includes political controversies: records indicate he provided financial support and offered meeting space to La Cagoule, an extreme-right group active in France during the 1930s–1940s; after the war, the company also employed former members of that movement in executive roles. These connections have been investigated and remain a significant part of his biography and of discussions about his corporate legacy.
