Evangeline Cory Booth was a prominent leader of the Christian movement known as The Salvation Army, serving as its fourth General from 1934 to 1939 — the first woman to hold that office. A daughter of the founder William Booth, she built her career within the organization from adolescence, facing hostile crowds in the streets of London and taking on command posts in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Her work included quelling a dissidence in the U.S. and organizing relief efforts after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. During World War I she coordinated support services for combatants and helped bolster the public reputation of the organization, which led to substantial subscriptions to cover wartime operational debts; for this work she received the Distinguished Service Medal from the U.S. Army, a distinction rare for a civilian. As General, she promoted international expansion of the institution’s activities in numerous regions and maintained a strong interest in its musical and evangelistic sections. Author of works on social and religious action, her institutional legacy includes a college and care units bearing her name, reflecting a lasting impact on the organization’s charitable practice and history.
