Filippo de Medici, known as Don Filippino, was a member of the Tuscan high nobility and the only male child of Grand Duke Francesco I de’ Medici and Joanna of Austria. Born amid intense dynastic expectation, his arrival was celebrated at court for securing the legitimate succession and displacing the claims of the grand duke’s illegitimate son by his mistress, Bianca Cappello. Baptized in honor of Philip II of Spain, Filippo received the title Grand Prince of Tuscany as a child. His private life was marked by family tragedy: his mother died when he was less than a year old, and his father subsequently married Bianca Cappello. Fragile in health from birth, Filippo died at the age of four. Modern studies on his remains, including an autopsy in 2004, identified a mild form of hydrocephalus, accounting for some of his physical weaknesses. A posthumous portrait displayed in the Galleria degli Uffizi preserves his image connected to the memory of the Medici house.
