Filippo Tommaso Marinetti was an Italian writer, poet, editor and ideologue, recognized as the founder of Futurism. Published in Le Figaro in 1909, his Manifesto of Futurism called for a break with artistic traditions, celebrating speed, technology, dynamism and the aesthetics of the industrial age, and influenced avant-garde painters and poets across Europe. Under his leadership, artists such as Umberto Boccioni, Luigi Russolo and Carlo Carrà drafted manifestos and developed practices aimed at renewing painting, poetry and performance, advocating an aggressive, anti‑traditional art. World War I marked a turning point: many Futurists were killed or dispersed, and the movement lost some of its initial momentum. Marinetti was also active in public and political life; he supported Italy’s intervention in the war, enlisted, and later moved closer to the National Fascist Party, viewing fascism as a continuation of Futurist ideas. His output includes poetry, theatre and theoretical texts, among them works such as Mafarka le futuriste and Guerra sola igiene del mondo. His influence on the modern avant‑gardes and the critical debate about the intersections of art, technology and politics in the twentieth century endures.
