Francis Bowes Sayre Jr. was an American Episcopal priest and public figure, known for serving as dean of the Washington National Cathedral for 27 years. A grandson of President Woodrow Wilson, Sayre built a religious career defined by engagement with social and institutional issues, leading the cathedral through decades of intense political and cultural disputes. Throughout his public life he was known as an opponent of racial segregation, poverty, McCarthyism and the Vietnam War. In 1965 he joined Martin Luther King Jr. in the march for voting rights from Selma to Montgomery, and in the 1950s he publicly denounced Senator Joseph McCarthy, criticizing the role of demagogic figures in public life. A graduate in theology from Union Theological Seminary, he also served as a chaplain in the Navy during World War II and held parish ministry before taking the cathedral post. He is remembered for his legacy of social activism, his role in acquiring and installing the cathedral’s 53-bell carillon, and his long leadership of one of the United States’ most visible religious institutions.
