Franz Rosenzweig was a German Jewish philosopher-theologian whose work had a profound impact on twentieth-century religious thought. In The Star of Redemption he examined the individuality of the person, the reality of the world and the transcendence of God, and he articulated creation, revelation and redemption as dimensions that place human beings in relation to the divine. His critique of Hegel’s all-encompassing idealism, sharpened after his experience of World War I, informed his distrust of philosophies that subordinate lives to grand narratives. Dissatisfied with impersonal academic instruction, Rosenzweig founded in Frankfurt the House of Jewish Learning, a center for education and dialogue that attracted many Jewish intellectuals and sought to connect theory with communal life. In the 1910s he also contributed to the study of German Idealism by bringing to light a manuscript attributed to Hegel, known as The Oldest System of German Idealism. His influence endures in Jewish–Christian dialogue—symbolized by the Buber‑Rosenzweig Medal—and in work on theology, translation and the philosophy of language. Collected writings and critical studies continue to support his reputation as a thinker who sought to integrate faith, ethics and historical responsibility.
