Friedrich Hölderlin was a German lyric poet, novelist and thinker whose work occupies a singular position between Weimar Classicism and Romanticism. Author of the novel Hyperion and of seminal hymns and odes, he sought to fuse Greek tradition with Christian elements and favored elevated poetic forms — hymn, ode and elegy — in works such as Brot und Wein, Patmos and Mnemosyne.

His intellectual formation included the University of Tübingen, where he associated with Hegel and Schelling, and contacts with figures from the Jena circle; this background helped shape his influence on German idealism and later philosophical readings that regard him as a critic of Fichtean subjectivity.

Personal life and mental health shaped his work: his love for Susette Gontard inspired the character Diotima in Hyperion, and after episodes of psychological suffering he spent decades living under care in a tower in Tübingen, a period in which he continued to produce poems signed “Scardanelli”.

Posthumous recognition grew through the nineteenth century and especially the twentieth, when his translations of Sophocles and his late hymns were reappraised, consolidating Hölderlin as one of the central voices of the German language.
