Friedrich Paul Max Sämisch was one of the leading German chess players of the early and mid‑20th century, also recognized as an openings theorist. A vigorous, combative player, he won major tournaments such as Vienna (1921) and placed on the podium at prestigious events including Baden‑Baden (1925) and Berlin (1927), in addition to notable victories over masters like Richard Réti and José Raúl Capablanca. In 1950 he received one of the first Grandmaster titles awarded by FIDE. His career was shaped by personal and historical circumstances: wounded during World War I, he turned to chess as a profession. Over the decades he became noted for his skill at quickplay and for prodigious blindfold displays, although he suffered recurring time‑control problems in classical games. As a theoretician, Sämisch left a lasting legacy with variations that bear his name, notably a system against the King’s Indian Defence — a pawn structure and kingside attacking plan that demanded deep study from his opponents. His work as a practitioner and analyst influenced later generations, securing him a permanent place in chess history.
