Fulgence Raymond was a French neurologist known for succeeding Jean-Martin Charcot in the neurology chair at the Salpêtrière in 1894. Initially trained in veterinary medicine, he moved into human medicine and became a central figure in the Paris neurology school, training and collaborating with figures such as Joseph Babinski, Georges Marinesco and Pierre Marie. His work included studies of neuritis, spinal cord diseases — including syringomyelia and tabes dorsalis — and sensory disorders such as hemianesthesia. He was also coauthor, with Pierre Janet, of investigations into neuroses and psychosomatic manifestations, contributing to the dialogue between neurology and psychology of the time. Author of numerous treatises and clinical lectures on diseases of the nervous system, Raymond left an important pedagogical and bibliographic legacy for French neurological teaching at the end of the 19th and start of the 20th century. He received decorations in the Légion d’honneur, culminating in the rank of commander in 1908. His career marked the transition and consolidation of clinical and anatomical practices in neurology, and he maintained influence through his pupils and extensive published work.
