Gaston Palewski was a French politician and diplomat, best known for his close personal and professional association with Charles de Gaulle during and after World War II. Educated at the Sorbonne, the École Libre des Sciences Politiques and Oxford, he made his mark as an anglophile and as a close adviser to figures such as Paul Reynaud before joining the Free French Forces in London. De Gaulle appointed him Director of Political Affairs and later Chief of Staff, making him one of his trusted men in negotiations with the British and in overseeing military missions in East Africa. After the war he was among the founders of Gaullism and served as a deputy for the Rassemblement du Peuple Français, rising to vice president of the National Assembly. He stepped back from active politics for a time, served as ambassador to Italy (1957–1962) and in 1962 became minister responsible for scientific research, atomic energy and space — witnessing the controversial “Béryl” nuclear test that exposed him to radiation and which he believed contributed to his leukemia. From 1965 to 1974 he presided over France’s Constitutional Council and later held honorary posts, including a seat at the Académie des Beaux‑Arts. Also a public figure for his private life — notably his affair with the writer Nancy Mitford, who immortalized him in fiction — he received high French and Italian honors and is remembered for both his political influence and his cultural and public presence in postwar France.
