Gelsey Kirkland is an American ballerina whose career shaped classical dance in the late 20th century. Discovered as a teenager by George Balanchine, she became a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, where she earned a reputation for performances in works by Balanchine, Jerome Robbins and Antony Tudor, including notable interpretations of Goldberg Variations and The Firebird.

She later joined the American Ballet Theatre as a star at the invitation of Mikhail Baryshnikov, expanding her repertoire with principal roles in the classics — Giselle, Kitri, Aurora, Odette/Odile in Swan Lake and Giulietta in Romeo and Juliet — and appearing as a guest soloist with major companies and theaters worldwide.

Her career combined critical acclaim with personal struggles involving physical and mental health, which led to a gradual withdrawal from performing and her retirement in 1986. After retiring, she devoted herself to teaching, staging repertoire as a répétiteur and to choreography; in 2007 she returned to the Metropolitan Opera House stage as an actress in the new Donizetti production for the American Ballet Theatre.

She is also the author of memoirs and books on dance, contributing to the historical and pedagogical record of technique and interpretive thought in classical ballet.
