Gerhard Herzberg was a prominent chemist and spectroscopist, known for elucidating the electronic structure and geometry of molecules, particularly free radicals. His academic and institutional career included major positions in Germany, Canada, and the United States, including university chairs and leadership of scientific divisions at the National Research Council of Canada. He received international recognition such as the Royal Society’s Royal Medal, the Order of Canada, and the 1971 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Author of authoritative works that became required reading in the field—most notably the monumental series Molecular Spectra and Molecular Structure and the book Atomic Spectra and Atomic Structure—Herzberg left a lasting legacy in molecular spectroscopy. Those volumes consolidated spectroscopic data and methods that guided generations of researchers in determining molecular constants and interpreting spectra.
In addition to his scientific contributions, he held significant institutional roles, including president of scientific societies and university chancellor, influencing scientific policy and training in Canada. His work systematized fundamental knowledge of diatomic molecules and radicals, remaining a central reference in molecular physics and chemistry.
