Giancarlo Baghetti was an Italian racing driver active mainly in the 1960s, whose career is remembered for a singular achievement in Formula 1. Emerging from the lower formulas, he rose quickly and in 1961 won three consecutive races that marked his international debut: two non-championship Grands Prix in Italy and then the French Grand Prix, which counted for the World Championship—making him the only driver to win on his debut in a championship Grand Prix. After that brilliant start, Baghetti joined Ferrari's factory team in 1962 but did not replicate his initial results; he scored a few fourth and fifth places and produced uneven performances with later teams such as ATS and Scuderia Centro Sud. Beyond F1, he enjoyed success in touring car racing, winning the European 1000cc class title in 1966 for Abarth. Baghetti's career was constrained by teams and cars that were not always competitive, which limited his accomplishments despite the talent he showed early on. He retired from racing at the end of the 1960s and later worked in journalism and photography related to motorsport and fashion. He remains part of the sport's history for his unique World Championship debut in Formula 1.
