Giangiacomo Feltrinelli was an Italian publisher and political activist, founder of the well‑known publishing house that bears his name. Born into a wealthy family, he established the Feltrinelli Library in the post‑Second World War years and, in 1954, created the publishing firm that would release works of major cultural impact such as Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago and Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s Il Gattopardo. The publication of Doctor Zhivago in 1957 became an editorial landmark, achieving wide international success and contributing to Pasternak’s Nobel Prize in 1958.
Throughout his career, Feltrinelli combined business activity with political commitment: he joined the Communist Party in 1945, provided financial support to leftist movements and maintained contacts with leaders such as Fidel Castro. From the late 1960s he radicalized his actions and, in 1970, founded the Gruppi d’Azione Partigiana (GAP), a paramilitary organization associated with a period of intense political conflict in Italy.
He died in 1972 under controversial circumstances: his body was found mangled by an explosion near Milan, and explanations range from an accident while preparing sabotage to intervention by intelligence services. The episode left an ambiguous legacy, blending cultural significance with direct involvement in the political struggles of the era.
