Giovanni Pascoli was one of the central figures of Italian poetry at the end of the 19th century, recognized both as a poet and as a classical scholar. His work developed an intimate, concentrated language focused on the “piccole cose” — small everyday objects and scenes — which replaced the grandiloquent tone of the past with a domestic, symbolic lyricism. This sensibility is evident already in Myricae (1891) and in the theoretical formulation of the fanciullino (1897), the proposition that the poet recovers the child’s capacity for wonder as a source of aesthetic and moral truth. His personal biography, marked by family tragedies and by political and teaching experiences, fed the thematic and psychological core of his poems; episodes such as his father’s murder resonate in famous pieces like “La cavalla storna.” A spiritual heir of Giosuè Carducci, Pascoli reconciled the classical tradition with Symbolist and Decadent tendencies without joining organized literary movements. A university professor and translator, he also wrote in Latin and influenced later generations of Italian poets, leaving a legacy defined by imagistic concision, an exploration of intimate suffering, and a search for consoling moral values in poetry.
