Glenn Robertson Yarbrough was an American folk singer and guitarist, best known as the lead tenor of the trio The Limeliters from 1959 to 1963 and for his subsequent solo career. With a clear voice and distinctive vibrato, he was noted for sophisticated harmonies and a repertoire that ranged from traditional folk to more pop-oriented arrangements, contributing to successful records and long tours that established the trio in the early 1960s folk scene. Before joining The Limeliters, Yarbrough recorded solo albums in the 1950s and built important relationships with figures in the folk movement, taking part in recordings for the emerging Elektra Records. His time with the trio coincided with significant commercial visibility — albums on RCA Victor and television appearances — but also with wear from life on the road and a 1962 plane crash that led him to reassess his priorities. After leaving the group, he released solo albums characterized by light acoustic arrangements and an aesthetic between pop and folk; his biggest commercial hit was the song “Baby the Rain Must Fall,” the title track of the film of the same name, which achieved chart success. Later he stepped away partly from the music industry to devote himself to sailing and personal projects, leaving a legacy as an interpreter with one of the most praised tenor voices of the folk revival period.
