Alice Maria Carolina Fernanda Rachele Joana Filomena of Bourbon-Parma was born a princess of Parma and became titular Grand Duchess of Tuscany upon her marriage to Ferdinand IV. A granddaughter of European dynasties, she was a great-granddaughter of King Charles X of France and belonged, through family ties, to the complex network of claimants and royal houses of the 19th century. She married the deposed grand duke in 1868, forming a large family that retained dynastic significance even after losing territorial power: among her children were Louise, who married King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony, and Joseph Ferdinand and Peter Ferdinand, central figures in the Tuscan house’s titular succession. Several of her descendants followed morganatic paths or renounced dynastic rights, reflecting the tensions between tradition and the social changes of the era. Widowed in 1908, Alice spent her final years in Schwertberg, where she died in 1935 at the age of 85. Buried in Sankt Gilgen, her memory remains linked to the legacy of European royal houses of the 19th and early 20th centuries, illustrating the transnational connections among monarchies and the persistence of dynastic prestige beyond the political sphere.
