Greer Garson was one of the most prominent British actresses of Hollywood’s golden age, especially during World War II. Trained in French and Literature at the University of London, she began her career in theatre and on early British television before being discovered by Louis B. Mayer and joining MGM. Her American debut in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939) earned her a first Academy Award nomination, and in 1942 she won Best Actress for Mrs. Miniver, a role that established her with both audiences and critics.
Throughout the 1940s she received multiple Academy Award nominations and starred in successes opposite Walter Pidgeon, building a reputation as a dramatic star identified with characters of strong moral and family presence. In the 1950s and 1960s she maintained a steady career, notably portraying Eleanor Roosevelt in Sunrise at Campobello, which brought her another Oscar nomination.
Beyond her film career, Greer Garson’s personal life included three marriages, the last to businessman E. E. "Buddy" Fogelson, with whom she moved to the United States and supported cultural initiatives such as the theatre at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Her legacy remains tied to the classic era of American cinema and to portrayals of balanced, patriotic heroines in wartime.
