Gregor Strasser was a German politician and an influential figure in the National Socialist movement during the 1920s and early 1930s. Trained as a pharmacist and a decorated World War I veteran, he first distinguished himself organizing the Sturmabteilungen (SA) in Bavaria and serving as a local party speaker and leader, taking part in the Munich Putsch of 1923.
In the following years he rose to lead propaganda and later to the NSDAP’s organizational direction, a post equivalent to general secretary, accumulating internal power and promoting a more socializing, nationalist program within the party. His proposals for a “second revolution” and his advocacy of greater income redistribution put him at odds with Adolf Hitler’s more personalistic and authoritarian leadership.
The rivalry reached its peak in 1932, when the so-called “Strasser crisis” and the intervention of Chancellor Kurt von Schleicher led to Gregor’s break with the party in December of that year. In 1934 he was murdered during the internal purge known as the Night of the Long Knives. His role highlights the ideological and power tensions at the origins of the Nazi regime and the existence of a dissident wing that sought to combine nationalism with social demands.
