Gretel Adorno (born Margarete Karplus) was a German chemist and intellectual associated with the circle of the Frankfurt School. She earned a doctorate in chemistry from Humboldt University of Berlin and was also notable for a broad and early academic formation, having completed multiple doctorates with distinction. Before marrying Theodor W. Adorno, she maintained relationships with important cultural figures of 1920s Berlin. From 1933 to 1937 she managed family businesses, at one point co-running a firm that employed about two hundred people until its closure; she retained financial independence until going into exile. In 1937 she married Theodor Adorno and began collaborating intensively with him and with Max Horkheimer, assisting in the preparation, transcription, and translation of manuscripts, including during their exile in the United States. Her intellectual contribution is acknowledged in the preface to Dialectic of Enlightenment and in other writings from the circle. After her husband’s death she helped organize and publish incomplete works posthumously, such as Aesthetic Theory, serving as a co-editor with Rolf Tiedemann. She lived with a mix of academic commitments, business activities, and roles as intellectual support, leaving a legacy chiefly tied to facilitating and editing central works of critical theory.
