Gustav Meyrink was an Austro‑Hungarian writer whose work established itself in the realms of fantastic and supernatural literature. Shaped by experiences in cities such as Vienna, Munich, Hamburg and especially Prague, Meyrink wove into his narratives the occult imagination he studied throughout his life: theosophy, Kabbalah, Western mysticism and esoteric practices appear as recurring thematic foundations of his work. Before dedicating himself entirely to writing, Meyrink had a career in banking and was a partner in the firm Meier & Morgenstern; an accusation of fraud in 1902 and a brief imprisonment ended that phase of his life and provided material for his novels. The episode involving the receipt of a mysterious little book, which purportedly prevented him from committing suicide, is linked to the start of his interest in esoteric traditions. His best‑known novel is Der Golem (published 1913–14), a work that cemented his reputation as one of the leading German‑language authors in the supernatural genre. Praised by critics as comparable to the universe of Edgar Allan Poe within the Austrian tradition, Meyrink left a mark on early twentieth‑century fantastic fiction and influenced later readings of occultism and mysticism in literature.
