Gustavo Adolfo Madero González was a central figure in the struggle against Porfirio Díaz’s regime and one of the main political architects of his brother Francisco I. Madero’s brief presidency. Born into a wealthy family in northern Mexico, he received part of his education in Europe and used his experience and financial contacts to fund and organize the revolutionary campaign that ousted the dictator in 1911. Although he did not hold a major public office, he served as an adviser and chief of staff to his brother’s government, directing the so-called Mexican secret police. In that capacity he coordinated operations against several uprisings opposed to the new administration — including the revolts led by Bernardo Reyes, Pascual Orozco, and Félix Díaz — at times making use of foreign collaborators and agents. His actions consolidated power but also earned him powerful enemies among the oligarchies and the high military command. During the events known as the Ten Tragic Days (Jornadas de la Decena Trágica), after being arrested and then released to followers of the conspirators, he was tortured and murdered in February 1913. His name remains in the toponymy of Mexico City, reflecting the historical imprint of his role in the Mexican Revolution.
