Gwen Raverat (born Gwendolen Mary Darwin) was a central figure in the renewal of British wood engraving in the early decades of the twentieth century. Trained at the Slade School, she developed a distinctive style influenced by Impressionism and Post‑Impressionism, marked by a painterly line that set her apart from both the Ditchling circles and the Central School. She was a founding member of the Society of Wood Engravers and gained recognition for publishing modern engravings in books and anthologies. Much of her output was produced for literary editions and for commissions by private presses and periodicals; among her most notable works are the engravings for Spring Morning (1915) and the series reproduced in the London Mercury, as well as illustrations for children’s books and classics published by Cambridge University Press and Penguin. She also produced sets for private presses such as Ashendene and Dropmore. Active in the artistic milieu around Cambridge and connected to the Darwin family, Raverat left a legacy both through images that helped popularize the technique and through her influence on subsequent generations of engravers. Her work is remembered for its narrative sensitivity and for the decisive role it played in legitimizing modern wood engraving in Britain.
