Hans-Dietrich Genscher was a prominent German politician, known for his long tenure as a minister and for his central role in the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Germany. A member of the FDP, he served as Minister of the Interior (1969–1974) and then as Foreign Minister and Vice-Chancellor from 1974 to 1992, becoming the longest-serving holder of those posts and serving under two different chancellors.
Regarded as a proponent of realpolitik and nicknamed the “master of diplomacy,” Genscher played a decisive role in removing barriers to German reunification and is widely considered one of the principal architects of that process. In 1991 he presided over the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and was actively engaged in international diplomacy during the dissolution of Yugoslavia, influencing the recognition of new republics.
After leaving government, he worked as a lawyer, international consultant and president of the German Council on Foreign Relations, and participated in cultural and historical memory initiatives. He published memoirs, collections of speeches and essays on foreign and European policy, establishing a lasting legacy in German and European diplomacy.
