James “Hap” Sharp was an American racing driver and businessman, remembered primarily for his partnership with Jim Hall in founding Chaparral Cars in the early 1960s in Midland, Texas. As co‑designer and driver of the innovative Chaparral sports cars, he helped bring about notable technical advances: the development of a fiberglass semi‑monocoque chassis and pioneering aerodynamic solutions that influenced high‑performance motorsport. Although he entered six Formula 1 Grands Prix, his renown stems mainly from victories and strong showings in endurance and sports car events with the Chaparral 2 models. Race records show successes at events such as Road America, Sebring, Nassau and various rounds of the USRRC, often securing pole positions, fastest laps and podiums in the cars he helped design. Sharp retired from full‑time driving in the mid‑1960s, with occasional later appearances, and left a significant technical legacy through the aerodynamic and structural innovations introduced at Chaparral. His career is linked to a period of experimentation and modernization in American sports car racing.
