Harry Benjamin was a German–American endocrinologist and sexologist, best known for his pioneering clinical work with transgender people. Trained in medicine in Germany, he emigrated to the United States in 1914 and built a career treating patients with gender‑identity concerns while developing therapeutic protocols that combined psychiatric care, hormone therapy, and collaboration with surgical specialists.
From the 1940s through the 1960s, Benjamin organized his clinical observations into a concept he called “transsexualism,” distinguishing it from transvestism and advocating affirmative treatments, including hormone therapy; his 1966 book, The Transsexual Phenomenon, became a professional reference. He treated hundreds of patients—many without charging fees—and maintained international collaborations with physicians and researchers in the field.
His work influenced the founding of institutions and the development of standards of care: the foundation bearing his name and the early guidelines for treating gender dysphoria helped professionalize services. Benjamin also worked in geriatrics and pursued interests in longevity, and he is frequently remembered for his clinical and humanistic approach to caring for transgender people.
